Biofilter Hayden Associates prepared the process design and equipment specifications, furnished equipment, supervised installation of equipment, started and trained operators for the wastewater treatment plants at seven bottling plants in China including Shen Zhen, Guangzhou, Fuzhou, Shanghai, Nanchang, Beijing and Chengdu. These WWTPs varied in size from flows of 250 m3/day (66,000 GPD) to 1,200 m3/day (316,800 GPD). The basic design consisted of equalization, oil removal, pH control, biofilter, activated sludge and aerobic sludge digestion. Sludge dewatering is by sand filters or pressure sludge filters. Dr. Hayden worked with local design institutes that prepared the civil drawings and the contractors that constructed the WWTPs. He conducted seminars on wastewater treatment operation and trained chemists in wastewater analysis. All WWTPs in China are in operation and the effluents are in compliance with Chinese environmental regulations of BOD5 < 60 mg/liter, COD < 100 mg/liter and TSS < 100 mg/liter.
