Hayden Associates functioned as project managers for the ‘fast track’ construction of the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) for the new bottling plant in Znin, Poland. Hayden Associates prepared the initial design and retained DOR-EKO, a local engineering firm to prepare the civil design and the environmental permit application. Bids from local contractors were secured for the civil works, electrical, piping, mechanical and gas-handling. Vendors were selected for equipment. Design flow was 1,200 m3/day and BOD5 was 1,500 mg/liter influent. The WWTP consisted of a caustic holding tank, equalization, pH neutralization with CO2, nutrient addition, anaerobic reaction, biofilter and clarifier with sludge recycled back to the anaerobic reactor.

Hayden Associates served as the construction manager coordinating the work of six contractors, scheduling equipment delivery and interfacing with Bovis, the site managers. The construction was completed in very difficult weather conditions requiring many adjustments to the schedule. A temporary pumping station with pH control was installed so that preliminary testing of the water systems and bottlewasher could be conducted. The WWTP was operational five months after project approval.

The WWTP is automated by PLC with a PC HMI (Human-Machine Interface) and remote monitoring/control in the QC laboratory. Hayden Associates supervised the start-up of the plant, trained the operators and prepared the O&M manual.
