Hayden Associates

Hayden Associates, a division of Hayden Environmental Group, is an environmental engineering firm that specializes in water.  HA has provided engineering design assistance, project management and equipment to food and beverage plants around the world for over twenty years for the treatment, recycling and reclamation of water and wastewater.  We have experience in China, Japan, The Philippines, Thailand, Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Poland and Russia.  We have worked with local design firms and institutes, local contractors and regulatory agencies in all of these countries.

Plant Water System Integration and Audits

In many parts of the world, water supplies are dwindling, quality is declining and demand is increasing.  As result, the management of plant water systems is critical.  HA audits existing systems to identify areas where waste can be eliminated and recycling opportunities occur.  We will design integrated systems to optimize the use of water and to guarantee treated water on demand.

Water Renovation and Recycling Systems

In those areas where water supply is diminished or very expensive, water recycling system make economic sense.  There are many sources of water discharged from processes that can be recycled, including filter and carbon backwashes, RO membrane reject water, rinses, washers rinses and CIP (Clean-In-Place) first rinses.  Anywhere caustic (sodium hydroxide) is used to clean and sterilize containers, discharge to the sewer costs money to replace and to neutralize.  HA has designed and installed recycling systems where pay back has occurred in less than a year.

Water Treatment System Design

HA analyzes water supplies and production demands to select the appropriate water treatment system.  We identify storage volumes, equipment sizes and materials of construction and level of automation required.

Wastewater Treatment Systems

Almost all food and beverage plants require some form of wastewater treatment.  HA has designed and installed over 30 wastewater treatment plants in many parts of the world.  Processes include pH neutralization with CO2, equalization, anaerobic (UASB), trickling filters, submerged aerobic filters, activated sludge and sludge handling and filtration.  Plant control has varied from entirely manual to totally automated with PLC/PC control.

In those areas in the world where effluent quality is critical, HA has installed submerged aquatic filters (SAF) to remove residual TSS, COD and nutrients.  The SAFs are constructed wetlands that employ aquatic plants to remove and mineralize the contaminants.

Engineering Design, Project Management and Start-Up

HA provides a complete design package of process, mechanical and electrical drawings along with equipment specifications and design reports.  A local design firm is then retained by the owner or by HA to prepare the architectural and civil drawings according to the local codes and to prepare permit applications.  Experienced project engineers are moved on-site to manage the project, supervise installation of the equipment, start-up the process and train the operators.

Operator Training

We have prepared O&M manuals and trained operators in Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese and Polish and Russian.  Our training includes theory of treatment, operation of the treatment train, sludge handling, analytical and recordkeeping.
